Although regarded as one of the worst forms of acne, severe cystic acne is quite rare and will not affect the majority of acne sufferers. It manifests itself on the skin in the form of cysts that are large red pustules. These cysts are tender to the touch and very painful. The causes of severe cystic acne are thought to be similar to those of common acne, as yet no one is sure why sufferers then go on to develop cysts.
As many sufferers of severe cystic acne are adolescents, of major concern is the psychological impact it can have on people who have the condition. It is easy to develop a poor body image and low self esteem. There is a chance the sufferer can become socially withdrawn and find it difficult to form relationships. This can be hard on teenagers whose main worry can be the negative reaction from their peers. This can lead to feeling of unworthiness and lead the sufferer to develop some form of depression.
